Personality

What is your character most afraid of? How are they defined by this fear?
Yuri is afraid of being helpless. He’s afraid of his power being taken away from him, of being at the mercy of others. He’s an orphan, who lived his first 18 years, and more, on the charity of others, and he was determined to make sure that he pulled his weight, that he contributed, that he cooked for the group home, read to the other kids, beat off the knights harassing his community, helped with repairs, and kept the lower quarter moving in the right direction.

Yuri is afraid of the way the world works. He’s afraid of power and the people who wield power in ways that directly and negatively impact people. He’s afraid of what those people might do, unchecked. He’s afraid that those people will take his power, and so he pits himself directly against them, even when he isn’t really in a position to do so. He doesn’t let lines of power mean anything to him, because if he did, he would be helpless against them, and at the end of the day, they’re all people.

He protects his own power by being fiercely independent, to a fault. He protects his friends’ power by helping them make decisions for themselves. And he protects the powerless by removing the people or institutions that have power over them.

What is your character's greatest desire? How are they defined by this desire?
Yuri’s greatest desire is to belong. He wants to be loved unconditionally, even if he doesn’t know or acknowledge this desire. It’s one reason that he makes himself useful, that he always helps other people, that he subjugates his own desires for Flynn’s, that he supports him in everything he wants to do, because Yuri doesn’t believe that he belongs, or that he’s loved, or that he’s worthy of help or care, but he wants those things, deep, deep down. It’s one reason that he continues to travel with the party, even though their reasons for traveling together aren’t always clear or real. It’s one reason why he’ll accept anyone who asks him, because he can create belonging for others. He creates space, partially because he wants space to be created for him.

What is your character's most defining memory or relationship?
Yuri’s most defining relationship is with his best friend, Flynn. They’re two sides of the same coin, characters who are defined by each other, their similarities and differences. Best friends from when they were seven years old, Flynn’s drive and determination gave Yuri direction. From the moment they met, Yuri’s main goal in his life was to make Flynn happy, to make Flynn’s life easier, to make sure Flynn can succeed. This goal plays out through his life, in him helping Flynn get a real sword to train to be a knight, training with him, becoming a knight with him, attempting to fit himself into a mold that doesn’t work for him.

After he started carving his own path, he still made decisions to help Flynn, like killing Ragou, a man who was out to assassinate Flynn. He cleared the way for Flynn, if somewhat circuitously, to become Commandant by killing Cumore, another knight captain who was hurting and using citizens of the Empire.

Yuri defines himself by Flynn, and how he isn’t Flynn, could never be Flynn. He sees himself as a shadow of Flynn, a failure in all the ways that Flynn succeeds, a tool to help Flynn move closer to his goal.

How will not having memories change your character? What core personality traits, if any, will change? How?
Not having memories will enhance many of Yuri’s core personality traits, most of which he suppresses or brushes off as useless.

Yuri is a man who suppresses his emotions. He keeps them to himself, doesn’t show them, pretends they don’t exist, because he believes that his emotions can and will be used against him. His emotions are a weak point, his soft belly, that he refuses to show to anyone. Without his memories, he will have less context for why showing his emotions is scary. He still won’t do it often, and won’t be good at it, but he won’t have evidence to fall back on that tells him that it’s dangerous.

He’s generous, but doesn’t see this as exceptional at all. He pretends that it’s no big deal to be generous. He’ll still see generosity as a necessity for being, but won’t be embarrassed by it, sharing openly and willingly.

Yuri doesn’t like himself, most of the time, and sees himself as a bad and useless person. He’ll retain these feelings, but won’t really know why he feels this way. They’ll be aimless, confusing feelings to him.

Overall, he’ll be more open with this thoughts and feelings, more overtly curious, and hopefully will grow more open and interested in the world around him as the game progresses.
